Norman A. Smith Memorial Scholarship
For Year 10 Students who reside, or attend a Secondary School, in The City of Monash
The object of the scholarship is to support Year 10 students to continue their education into tertiary studies with a view to becoming leading members of a profession or trade and contribute to the further development of the nation to the benefit of all Australians.
The Norman A. Smith Memorial Scholarship honours the memory of a man who was an active member of the R.S.L. from 1947 until his death in November, 1982. Norman Smith worked tirelessly assisting ex-service men and women with the many problems that confronted them after their discharge from the services following the conclusion of the Second World War in 1945.
Norman Smith was a member of the Waverley Sub-Branch and was active in all facets of its activities. He was elected Vice-President from 1962 to 1964; President from 1965 to 1967; and Secretary from 1968 until his passing in 1982. During this period, membership of the Sub- Branch increased from about 180 to over 1000. Norman was instrumental in the foundation of the associated Waverley R.S.L. Club in 1968 and was the Club’s first and only Secretary / Manager up to the time of his death. He was elected Life Member of the Sub-Branch in 1965; and of the Waverley R.S.L. Club in 1975.
Norman Smith represented Waverley Sub- Branch at the Annual State Conference of Sub- Branches for 24 years from 1959 to 1982; was a delegate to the No. 3 District Board for the same period, and was elected a State Councillor of the Victorian Branch from 1968 until his death.
Norman was a member of the Executive of the Victorian Branch for some years where he was vitally interested and concerned with the welfare and activities of young people. He was elected a Life Member of the Victorian Branch in 1970, and of the No. 3 District Board in 1982.
Apart from his R.S.L. activities, Norman was intensely interested in and involved with competitive sport as an administrator. He encouraged young people to take an interest and participate in sporting activities and in their physical fitness. He was also a keen reader, a debater of matters of public interest and was an actor of some note, appearing on both radio and in television shows as well as in several stage shows.
